Crossing of the Lanzo Valleys via the Gastaldi, Cibrario, Tazzetti, Ca' d'Asti Refuges (4/5 days)
5-day trekking to discover the high Lanzo Valleys.Approach
Description
1st day: Forno Alpi Graie – Pian della Mussa – Rifugio Gastaldi
departure from Forno Alpi Graie 1219 m then left along the Sea valley to Alpe di Sea, take the slightly marked fork on the left towards Ghicet di Sea, follow the red marks until the dry bed of a stream cross to the left where rhododendrons form a real Amazon jungle that rises steeply (easy to lose the trail). Look for a passage difficult to see from afar but once found it is easier to follow, making your way through the vegetation. Once the forest ends you arrive at an obvious sign that makes us deviate to the right climbing then along diagonal ledges of a steep wall up to Ghicet di Sea 2750 m. Descent on the side of the Ciamarella plain with more obvious signs and cairns until Rifugio Citta di Ciriè 1850 m at Pian della Mussa (where you can stay overnight, or climb back up on the opposite side for Rifugio Gastaldi 2659 m, which is reached on a comfortable path (last section a bit steeper, in about 2 hours from Pian della Mussa.
2nd day: Rifugio Gastaldi – Rifugio Cibrario
from Rifugio Gastaldi to Rifugio Cibrario 2626 m with some ups and downs but on a decidedly easy route, passing through the beautiful Rossa lake. Well marked trail. If you wish, from here it is possible, with desire and time, to climb to the top of Croce Rossa, with an additional 750 m of elevation gain.
3rd day: Rifugio Cibrario – Rifugio Tazzetti
From Rifugio Cibrario climb to Colle Sulè 3073 m and descend into the Stura di Viù valley. Here to go to Rifugio Tazzetti there is a high trail not easy to find, in this case you need to descend to the bottom of the valley which deviates to the left and, before the stream descends into a gorge with jumps at about 2050 m, you can climb back up the slope on our right, crossing a stream and cutting across the slope until joining the trail that from Malciaussia leads to Rifugio Tazzetti 2642 m. Alternatively you descend to Malciaussia and climb back up the classic trail to Rifugio Tazzetti, especially in case of poor visibility this is the most recommended choice.
4th day: Rifugio Tazzetti – Rocciamelone – Rifugio Ca' d'Asti
From Rifugio Tazzetti you climb to Colle della Resta emerging onto the Rocciamelone glacier (be careful of the section before the pass which is not straightforward with rocks dirty with debris. You cross the glacier easily without crampons (useful at the beginning of the season) following a trail marked by cairns on the edge of the glacier where it is flatter. Once the flat section is finished you must climb a steeper slope of scree (snowfield at the beginning of the season) to reach the flat West ridge between Rocciamelone and Passo di Novalesa, at the point where it forms a wide pass (many cairns). From here you climb along the somewhat tiring trail along the West ridge to the top of Rocciamelone 3538 m. Descent to Rifugio Ca' d'Asti 2854 m.
5th day: Rifugio Ca' d'Asti -
from Rifugio Ca' d'Asti you descend until you meet the fork on the left for Croce di Ferro 2558 m, which crosses a long flat section on the slope on the side of the Val di Susa. There is a higher trail but in some sections it has landslides and is not straightforward, it is better to take the slightly lower one even if it increases the elevation loss. From Colle della Croce di Ferro (Rifugio Ravetto managed by volunteers), you descend to Malciaussia along a beautiful mule track. If you had not left a second car here, you descend to Usseglio (possibly getting a ride and then by bus you descend to Lanzo and then return to Forno Alpi Graie.
